Russell Westbrook posted the first triple-double that included 50 points scored since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it during 1975. The offensive explosion by Westbrook led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 113-110 overtime win over Phoenix Friday night.
The final line for Westbrook read 51 points, 13 boards and 10 assists. That was the third highest point total of any triple-double.
Westbrook scored 12 points during the first half, but exploded for 39 after the half, including 23 during the third quarter. He gave the Thunder the lead for good during overtime with just over 7 seconds remaining. After he sank a pair of free throws that sealed the game, Westbrook was at the historic 50-point plateau for a triple double.
Westbrook did not seem that impressed with his feat saying he had not done much reflection on it as of yet. Westbrook was on the floor for 45 minutes against Phoenix displaying relentless energy and spirit that entire time said teammates.
Westbrook could have put the game away a number of times during regulation missing a number of shots over the last few minutes of regulation. However, during overtime he attacked the Suns basket for the bucket that eventually was the winner.
Westbrook took an amazing 44 shots on the night, but his head coach Billy Donovan indicated he was not bothered by that as he thought his point guard took what was given him by the opposing defense.
Teammates of Westbrook also did not appear to have a problem with the number of shots the point guard took.
Victor Oladipo scored 21 points for the Thunder, but was the only other Oklahoma City player in double figures. He is new to the team and said players talk all the time about Westbrook, but when you play with him on your team you realize the quality of player he is and the type of person he is.
The misconception of how he was before is false said Oladipo. He played for two straight months during the summer with Westbrook and could tell be talking to him and watching him play the type of player he is.
Westbrook came up just short of recording a triple double in the opening game of the season for the Thunder on Wednesday. The Thunder beat Philadelphia and Westbrook scored 32 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out 9 assists.
