The Los Angeles Raiders are now the Las Vegas Raiders after owners in the NFL approved the move by the Raiders 31-1 on Monday.
Now the big question is what if anything will happen about betting on the NFL in the state of Nevada. Gaming regulations in the state allow governing bodies of sports to request that the legal sportsbooks be prohibited from accepting bets on the games involving pro franchises that are based in Nevada, including home games, away games and playoff games.
Therefore, if the Las Vegas Raiders reached the playoffs or even the Super Bowl betting could be banned if the league were to exercise its ability to ban sportsbooks from accepting bets on games the Raiders are involved in.
Roger Goodell the NFL Commissioner says the league is opposed to any legalized sports betting in the U.S. even now with one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, the Raiders, moving to Vegas, home of the largest market for sports betting in the country.
In 2013, at a time the first discussion were taking place for a new stadium for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, a spokesperson for the NFL said that the league would not be interested even in having an exhibition game played there because of the city’s relationship with sports betting.
However, of recent, Goodell said the league had evolved somewhat on gambling, but it is not known just how evolved the league has become and what its comfort level is with legal betting on sports before the Raiders have their first game.
The NFL has 30 days before the first game of the newly located Las Vegas Raiders play to file a request to disallow betting. On Monday, gaming control officials said they had not yet heard from anyone in the NFL office related to a request such as that.
The gaming commission in Nevada, if they receive such a request, will have the last say regarding the issue.
When contacted, an NFL spokesperson did confirm that the league has not contacted the Gaming Control in Nevada, but would not give any further details as to if the league will do so before the start of the season.
The Vegas Golden Knights will start play in the NHL and that league will also have the same type of decision to make related to allowing or requesting that no betting be allowed on the new franchise when it begins play in the NHL during the 2017-2018 NHL season.
